Serena Williams Withdraws from Wimbledon Doubles

Date:

Serena Williams has withdrawn from the women’s doubles event at Wimbledon following a knee injury sustained during her singles match against Maya Joint. The 44-year-old, a seven-time singles champion, faced a defeat on Centre Court, leading to her inability to participate in the doubles with her sister Venus, 46.

In a statement on Instagram, Serena expressed her disappointment at having to pull out of the doubles competition. Despite her efforts to prepare, her knee did not recover sufficiently for her to compete. The sisters will be substituted by a lucky loser as Venus also exited the mixed doubles with Kevin Krawietz.

Serena shared a photo of the fluid drained from her knee after the singles match, indicating the severity of her injury. She thanked the tournament director and fans for their support and hinted at a future comeback. Earlier, she had expressed hope of playing doubles with Venus, emphasizing the joy of returning to the court and the importance of perseverance.

Her agent, Jill Smoller, confirmed Serena’s knee tweak during the first set of her singles match and assured that she is working towards being fit for her upcoming doubles match. Serena left the site unaided after the incident and is determined to recover in time for her next match.
