President Donald Trump’s Independence Day speech has been delayed due to severe weather conditions in Washington, leading event organizers to evacuate the area on July 4. Police swiftly guided attendees to safety, urging them to leave immediately despite some hesitation. Amid chants of patriotism and calls for evacuation, authorities announced the temporary suspension of the event for public safety, advising people to seek shelter in nearby buildings or their vehicles.
The Freedom 250 event spokesperson, Danielle Alvarez, assured participants that updates on the program and reopening times would be shared soon, recommending seeking refuge in museums or federal buildings nearby. The Washington metro system confirmed the availability of underground stations for shelter.
Security measures were heightened as the US Secret Service temporarily closed checkpoints for attendees screening. Military flyovers, a tradition of the Fourth of July celebrations in Washington, were canceled for the day due to the inclement weather. Celebrations in other cities like Hartford, Connecticut, and Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, were also affected.
Despite the weather disruptions, festivities in cities such as New York proceeded as planned, with historical displays reminiscent of past celebrations. The continuation of the Salute to America event remains uncertain as Trump is expected to deliver his speech at 9:45 pm, with possible adjustments to accommodate the storm.
Earlier, Trump expressed his commitment to deliver a lengthy speech in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday, emphasizing his determination to proceed despite challenges. The event’s schedule and further updates are pending confirmation.
