WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

Date:

WhatsApp is addressing a major issue by introducing a new feature that encourages users to take action promptly. Currently, users can only communicate on the platform by sharing phone numbers, which is not always convenient. However, Meta-owned WhatsApp is finally resolving this issue by introducing unique usernames, allowing users to share this identifier instead of their phone numbers.

The change aims to make interactions more seamless, especially when connecting with new contacts like classmates, neighbors, or group members. Users often prefer chatting without disclosing their phone numbers, and this new feature caters to that need.

Moreover, the update enhances privacy in group conversations. Users engaging in community or social group chats can now participate without immediately revealing their phone numbers to unfamiliar individuals. WhatsApp has emphasized that users can secure their preferred usernames before the full launch to secure unique identifiers amid the platform’s massive user base.

To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the next few months, with notifications sent to users once usernames are accessible in their regions.
