“UK Braces for Prolonged Heatwave Scenario”

Date:

Britons may experience multiple heatwaves in the coming months, prompting a call for readiness for a prolonged summer of high temperatures. The UK has already entered its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 35°C this week. The Met Office has issued a warning that the upcoming heatwave will bring abundant sunshine and gentle winds to many southern regions. There is a possibility that the all-time temperature record of 40.3°C may be surpassed in the near future, as experts caution that it is nearing a critical point.

Senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services stated that there are strong indications of recurrent heatwaves over the next few months, especially considering the remaining summer period, including September, which is now seen as a summer month. On Monday, the mercury peaked at 34°C in Teddington, southwest London, according to the Met Office. The East of England is projected to be the warmest area on Thursday and Friday.

Dale highlighted the influence of climate change and a powerful El Niño phenomenon on the current weather conditions. He emphasized that rising ocean and sea temperatures, coupled with the uncertainties associated with the super El Niño, are likely to keep the UK and other northern hemisphere regions experiencing prolonged heat.

Predictions suggest that the heatwaves may persist throughout July, particularly in the southern counties, extending possibly into early August and even early September. The Met Office confirmed on Monday that the Southeast of England has officially met the heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 28°C. Temperatures are set to climb further across the UK in the coming days, with additional regions expected to meet their local heatwave thresholds.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to take necessary precautions due to the high UV levels and soaring temperatures. Pollen levels are anticipated to be exceptionally high across most UK regions, prompting warnings for individuals with hayfever to take extra precautions, such as frequent showers to minimize pollen exposure.
