Nathan Chasing Horse, known for his role in “Dances With Wolves,” has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a judge for sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls.
Following a guilty verdict on 13 charges, mostly related to the sexual assault of three women, a Nevada jury handed down the sentence.
During the sentencing, victims and their families spoke to Judge Jessica Peterson, detailing the ongoing impact of the trauma caused by the 49-year-old Chasing Horse, who had abused his role as a spiritual leader.
Corena Leone-LaCroix, who was 14 when assaulted by Chasing Horse, expressed the irreparable loss she experienced, stating, “The life that little girl could have lived has been taken from me forever, including my youth, childhood experiences, and milestones like my first kiss and graduation.”
Typically, the names of sexual assault victims are not disclosed, but Leone-LaCroix chose to speak out publicly.
Throughout the proceedings, Chasing Horse, in his Clark County Detention Center attire, maintained his innocence, facing the victims as they delivered their impact statements. He will be eligible for parole after serving 37 years.
Disputing the verdict, Chasing Horse claimed a “miscarriage of justice” during the court session.
Judge Peterson highlighted the persistence of Chasing Horse’s denial despite the presented evidence, stating, “You exploited these women’s trust and spirituality for your own gratification,” before announcing the life sentence.
The legal process against Chasing Horse began with his arrest and indictment in 2023, sparking investigations across the US and Canada for additional charges.
Chasing Horse faces a sexual assault charge in British Columbia, related to an incident near Keremeos in 2018. Legal proceedings were temporarily paused due to his US charges but have since resumed.
Once his appeals are exhausted, British Columbia prosecutors will determine their next steps.
