Trump Mixes Up Iran and Japan in Confusing Press Conference

Date:

During a recent press conference, President Donald Trump, aged 80, appeared to be confused as he discussed alleged attacks on the US Navy by the Islamic Republic of Japan.

The president, in the presence of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, delved into details about supposed hostilities in the Persian Gulf. Trump mentioned an incident involving the US aircraft carrier, the Abraham Lincoln, currently deployed in the Middle East, stating that “We had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan.”

He described a scenario where 111 missiles were reportedly fired at the aircraft carrier over an hour, emphasizing that all the missiles were successfully intercepted, primarily by the Patriot defense system, among other methods.

This mix-up by the president seems to refer to a previous attack on the US carrier by Iran earlier this year, as tensions escalated between Iran and US forces in the region.

Trump’s confusion led him to mistakenly associate Iran with Japan, despite the two countries having no recent history of conflict since World War II.

In another moment of confusion, Trump inadvertently mistook President Zelensky for his adversary, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, asking reporters if they had a question for Putin, causing amusement among the press.

Despite the mix-ups, President Trump attempted to correct himself and indicated he would relay the reporter’s question to President Putin.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar gaffe made by Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, who once introduced Zelensky as “President Putin” during a NATO summit in 2035.

Following his remarks, Trump declared an end to the ceasefire between the US and Iran, leading to US strikes on Iran in response to attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran. Trump criticized Iranian leaders, calling them “scum,” and pledged to potentially launch further strikes on Iran.

The US military confirmed that it targeted over 60 small craft belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in retaliation for Iran’s actions in the strait.

Subsequently, global markets reacted to the news, with oil prices surging and stock markets experiencing declines. The S&P 500 dropped by 0.8%, the Dow Jones fell by 1.4%, and the price of Brent crude oil rose by 7.2% to $79.48 per barrel.

The developments underscored the ongoing geopolitical tensions and their impact on financial markets worldwide.
