A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting his partner, causing severe injuries that left her reliant on straws for eating and drinking for months. Jonathan Kingsbury, 41, attacked his partner in her home after a night out on March 11, 2023, in Cork. The assault involved slamming her head against a counter, punching her, strangling her, and throwing heavy kitchen items at her.
The victim sustained serious injuries, including a fractured jaw requiring surgery with metal plates, a fractured eye socket, a broken nose, and the loss of two teeth. Following the attack, she had to be hospitalized for three days. Kingsbury, who pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and criminal damage, was described as remorseful by his defense barrister.
The victim shared in a victim impact statement the ongoing psychological trauma she experiences, including anxiety, fear of leaving her home, and difficulty sleeping. She expressed concerns about her stiffening jaw and the metal plates triggering airport security systems during travel. Despite Kingsbury’s remorse and sobriety, the judge emphasized the severe impact of the assault on the victim and sentenced him to three years and nine months in prison, with the final nine months suspended for two years. Kingsbury must adhere to good behavior and engage with probation services upon release to prevent future harm to intimate partners.
