Three individuals have been sentenced to prison following the theft of nearly £1 million worth of weight loss medications from a healthcare distribution center in St Albans.
The theft occurred on January 24 when burglars broke into the distribution center on Handley Page Way and stole 79 boxes of Mounjaro, valued at £944,544.89.
Mark Harding, aged 55, Peter Costello, aged 44, and Robert Townsend, aged 59, received five years and three months in jail each after admitting to the burglary at St Albans Crown Court.
According to the police, Harding and Costello initially entered the premises, disabled internal cameras, and took several boxes of the weight loss drug from a refrigerated storage unit. They returned with Townsend less than two hours later and stole over 70 additional boxes of Mounjaro.
The trio was identified through phone records, CCTV footage, and automatic number plate recognition cameras. During the arrests on February 11, over £60,000 in cash was found hidden at the homes of Harding and Townsend.
Additionally, Harding and Townsend were handed concurrent nine-month prison sentences for possessing criminal property.
Detective Sergeant Will Daglish expressed satisfaction with the guilty pleas, emphasizing the serious health risks associated with mishandling weight loss drugs. He characterized the burglary as premeditated and calculated, leading to the substantial prison terms for the offenders.
Sophia Malik, a lawyer from the Crown Prosecution Service, highlighted the meticulous planning involved in the burglary and commended the cooperation between prosecution and law enforcement that led to the convictions. Malik noted the use of phone location data, ANPR records, and CCTV evidence in linking the defendants to the crime.
All three individuals acknowledged their involvement, resulting in their incarceration.
