Police were captured on dashcam ramming a driver traveling in the wrong direction on a motorway. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) released video footage showcasing a pursuit that culminated in the apprehension of three individuals in the suspect vehicle by pursuing law enforcement officers.
The police received a tip-off from an ANPR camera around 7:22 pm the previous day, flagging a potentially cloned or stolen vehicle. Responding to the alert, officers proceeded to Bury New Road in Heywood, near Rochdale, where the vehicle had been sighted. Upon spotting the car at a petrol station, the driver attempted to flee upon noticing a police vehicle nearby, according to GMP.
Subsequently, a chase ensued as the vehicle entered the motorway, trailed by two police cars, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. Following a pursuit, the driver tried to exit the motorway by executing an illegal U-turn, as detailed by GMP.
The police force emphasized the severe public risk posed by the driver going the wrong way on the motorway, necessitating immediate intervention. Officers successfully cornered the vehicle twice to prevent it from leaving the motorway.
After a four-minute pursuit, officers made tactical contact to halt the vehicle. Notably, two police vehicles sustained significant damage during the incident. All three occupants of the fleeing car were apprehended, with the driver arrested on suspicion of various offenses including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance. The passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
The driver has been released on bail pending further investigation.
