Keir Starmer hints at a possible departure from his promise to refrain from awarding resignation honors. The Prime Minister, in response to queries about creating an honors list upon leaving office later this month, did not definitively rule out the possibility on two occasions. Starmer, who previously criticized Rishi Sunak for allowing Boris Johnson to grant honors to supporters during his time as opposition leader in 2023, had stated that such actions were difficult to justify.
Although he had pledged not to issue resignation honors in the past, Starmer now appears to be considering nominating allies for such honors as his tenure at No10 nears its end. The tradition allows Prime Ministers to nominate individuals for honors post their departure, subject to approval by their successor and the House of Lords Appointments Commission.
Starmer made these statements during his final significant international summit as Prime Minister, ahead of his expected formal resignation on July 20. He acknowledged the decision of his MPs that led to his resignation last month, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring a successful transition and the prosperity of a future Labour government and the country.
