“Accused Killer of Charlie Kirk Regrets Actions, Court Hears”

Date:

A recording played in a Utah court revealed that the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk expressed regret to his roommate the day after the conservative activist was shot dead. Tyler Robinson, 23, appeared in court for the fourth day of the preliminary hearing where it will be determined if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder but has not entered a plea yet.

Charlie Kirk, known for his association with former President Donald Trump and his role in mobilizing young Republican voters during the 2024 election, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. Robinson surrendered himself to authorities the following day.

During the court session, a recorded interview with Lance Twiggs, Robinson’s former roommate and romantic partner, was presented to prosecutors. Robinson’s legal team opposed the public release of Twiggs’ statements, claiming they might be misconstrued as a confession, potentially jeopardizing Robinson’s right to a fair trial.

Prosecutors allege that Robinson confessed in a note to Twiggs, indicating his intention to target Charlie Kirk. Additionally, Robinson reportedly sent a text message to Twiggs citing his dissatisfaction with Kirk’s actions as his motive for the attack.

Furthermore, Robinson allegedly admitted his involvement in the shooting in an online chat before turning himself in. Twiggs, who provided information to investigators, was granted immunity for his statements to safeguard them from being used against him in any future legal proceedings.

The court is awaiting State District Judge Tony Graf’s decision at the conclusion of this week’s hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Robinson’s legal team has refrained from commenting on his guilt or innocence but has requested to exclude the death penalty as a potential punishment.

Advocates for the media and Kirk’s widow, Erika, who was present at the hearing, have urged for the public disclosure of Twiggs’ statements and other evidence. They argue that transparency is crucial to uphold trust in the legal system. Jeffrey Neiman, representing the Kirk family, emphasized the importance of openness and requested that all evidence against Robinson be made available in real-time during the hearing.

In response to these requests, Judge Graf stated that not all evidence would be disclosed publicly to ensure the protection of both the victim’s family and the defendant’s rights.
