A tragic incident occurred when a family from Chignautla in Puebla State, Mexico, got trapped in a cave due to flash floods caused by sudden heavy rain. The Peña family, out on a sightseeing tour for a birthday celebration, found themselves stuck along with a guide inside the Chichicazapan cave in Cuetzalan. Following intense rainfall, the underground river surged rapidly, forcing the group deeper into the cave where escape became impossible.
While three individuals managed to reach safety on the first day, the situation turned fatal as one family member, Gerardo Julián de los Santos, drowned. Currently, three people, including Ismael Peña, Araceli’s husband, and their daughters Karime Peña and Jazmín Lizbeth Peña, remain missing. The family entered the cave at the guide’s suggestion to avoid getting wet, unaware of the impending flood.
Search and rescue operations have faced challenges due to continuous rain and safety concerns for the rescuers. Cuetzalan, known for heavy rainfall that can lead to sudden waterway surges, poses difficulties for search efforts. Authorities stress the importance of resuming operations only when weather conditions permit. The tourists were equipped with basic gear like life jackets, helmets, and lamps, lacking advanced safety equipment.
The Peña family’s trip to celebrate their youngest daughter’s 21st birthday and fulfill her desire to explore the caves ended in tragedy. The guide, employed by Destino de Aventura, was hospitalized briefly after the incident. Efforts involving specialized teams, including divers and speleologists, have been repeatedly halted due to the challenging conditions.
