Twenty-nine years ago, I made my first trip to Miami for the Daily Mirror, under much sadder circumstances than covering England in a World Cup. I was there to report on the assassination of fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was fatally shot outside his oceanfront mansion. The shocking images of his blood dripping down the steps deeply affected the world.
Miami, especially the South Beach area, mourned the loss of Versace, as he was considered one of their own. His luxurious mansion, Casa Casuarina, situated on South Beach with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, was where the tragedy unfolded.
Versace was shot upon returning from a leisurely outing, sparking a massive manhunt for his killer, Andrew Cunanan. The city was gripped with fear as Cunanan remained at large, prompting concerns of further violence.
Eventually, Cunanan was found dead in a houseboat, marking the end of his cross-country killing spree that claimed Versace as his fifth and final victim. Princess Diana attended Versace’s funeral, only to tragically pass away herself a month later.
Versace’s profound connection to Miami was evident in his words: “Here in Miami, I’ve finally found what I was looking for: the centre of my circle. I want to stay here and live out my time… forever.” His former mansion, now a luxury hotel, stands as a reminder of his legacy, with the entrance still bearing the steps where the tragic event occurred.
Originally built in 1930 by Alden Freeman, the mansion was purchased and renovated by Versace in 1992. Today, it operates as a high-end boutique hotel, restaurant, and event space. As thousands of England fans pass by the iconic location, some may pause to reflect on the history and pay their respects to the late designer.
