“England Cricket Players Advised to Avoid Alcohol Post-Match”

Date:

England cricket players have been advised to steer clear of alcohol consumption the day following a match, as part of newly issued guidelines following a recent incident. Following a victory in the first summer Test against New Zealand, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were found out past midnight at Rex Rooms on London’s King’s Road, despite the introduction of a midnight curfew by England post the Ashes series. This incident led to their omission from the second Test due to an altercation involving a Saracens academy rugby player that resulted in an injury to England’s security guard.

There was discontent among England’s leadership regarding the incident, with Atkinson reportedly unaware of the curfew rules. In response, managing director Rob Key suggested a potential alcohol ban, although the official policy update fell short of implementing such a measure. The revised alcohol policy was shared with players between the first and second Tests.

Following the incident, Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket after rejoining the team for the third Test. The policy, as reported by The Telegraph, enforces strict guidelines throughout an England men’s home series and tour, emphasizing the midnight curfew and prohibiting players from appearing inebriated in public or engaging in alcohol-related activities on social media.

The updated rules require players to inform team management or security if they are outside the team hotel after 10pm. Additionally, a new section stipulates that alcohol consumption is not recommended from the day before a match until the day after it has concluded. Public alcohol consumption is only permitted with explicit approval from management, with private consumption discouraged to prioritize preparation, recovery, and professionalism.

The primary goal of the new guidelines is to safeguard players, maintain the reputation of cricket in England and Wales, and optimize player performance.
