“Man Shot by Police in Newport Crossbow Incident”

A police shooting incident occurred in South Wales involving a man suspected of carrying a crossbow. The incident took place in St Edward Street, Newport, late on Friday after reports of threatening behavior were made. Police officers, including trained firearms personnel, responded to the scene where a 21-year-old Newport resident, seen with a weapon believed to be a crossbow, was shot by the officers. The man was subsequently hospitalized and is reported to be in a stable condition.

Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain assured the public that there is no further risk to the community as the incident is isolated, and there is no ongoing search for additional suspects. While firearm-related incidents are uncommon in the area, Gwent Police emphasized their commitment to addressing such reports seriously and professionally, tailoring their response according to the perceived risk levels.

Gwent Police released a statement detailing the sequence of events, urging anyone with relevant information, such as CCTV footage, to assist in the investigation by contacting them through various channels, including phone, website, or social media. Furthermore, they highlighted the involvement of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in reviewing the incident, in line with standard procedures.
