The United States has conducted strikes on over 100 locations in Iran in response to a missile attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The crew of the container ship had to abandon it as it caught fire. In retaliation, Iran targeted sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. The US Central Command reported hitting approximately 140 targets, including missile and drone launch sites, ammunition depots, and communication facilities.
This development occurs within the context of ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving President Donald Trump, Israel, and other nations. Despite efforts to negotiate a peace deal within a 60-day period, tensions persist. Labour minister Sir Chris Bryant criticized the lack of a clear exit strategy from the conflict, expressing concerns about global economic security.
The US emphasized that the recent strikes aim to limit Iran’s ability to threaten civilian and commercial vessels in the region. President Trump declared an end to any interim agreements with Iran, boasting about recent military actions against the country.
Disagreements persist regarding the status of the vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas passes. While the US claims the strait remains open, Iran disputes this assertion. Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned against unilateral actions and demanded compliance with agreements.
In the recent incident in the Strait of Hormuz, a container ship flying the flag of Cyprus was struck by Iran, resulting in a missing crew member. All crew members, including the missing individual, were Indian nationals. India condemned the attack and initiated search and rescue efforts in cooperation with Oman to ensure unrestricted navigation in the strait.
