Multiple individuals are currently trapped in an avalanche at a popular ski resort, leading to an urgent search and rescue operation. The avalanche struck Sweden’s Kiruna municipality near Riksgränsen, reportedly engulfing ten people under the snow. Emergency responders, including seven fire engines and two ambulances, have swiftly mobilized to the location.
Authorities were notified of the incident at 1:45 pm local time, with rescuers facing a 45-minute journey to reach the mountain. Local police revealed that five individuals were extricated from the snow by fellow mountain-goers before official rescue teams arrived.
The rescued individuals have been transported to a hospital for evaluation, while rescue crews continue efforts to identify any remaining trapped persons. Concerns arise as up to ten individuals are still unaccounted for, as stated by line operator Engla Hansson to Aftonbladet.
To bolster the rescue operation, authorities have requested support from Norway, including additional personnel and a rescue helicopter.
