“UK Study: Burglary Risk Higher in Less Affluent Areas”

Date:

Families residing in less affluent areas of the UK are at a higher risk of experiencing burglaries compared to those in wealthier neighborhoods, according to recent research findings. Home Office data reveals a decrease in residential burglaries, with 154,000 incidents recorded in 2025, marking an 11% drop from the previous year and a 20% decline from 2022. Only 5% of the reported home break-ins resulted in charges, but this number might increase as 7% of cases are still under investigation.

Charge rates varied significantly across regions, with South Wales having the highest rate at 12% and Hertfordshire the lowest at 2%. Despite major cities like Birmingham and Leeds leading in total burglary numbers, adjusting for household population showed a different scenario. Middlesbrough had the highest burglary rate, with 863 incidents in 2025, translating to 14 break-ins per 1,000 households, even after a 12% decrease in burglaries.

Middlesbrough ranks second in England for deprivation levels, following Blackpool, while Bradford had the next highest burglary rate at 13 incidents per 1,000 households. Several northern cities, including Kingston upon Hull, Leeds, and Burnley, reported around 12 burglaries per 1,000 households. Conversely, affluent rural areas like North Norfolk, Breckland, and Eden in Cumbria recorded only two burglaries per 1,000 households.

Residential burglary involves unauthorized entry into an inhabited building with the intent to steal, including sheds and garages. Urban areas continue to face a higher concentration of burglaries, while rural communities benefit from geographic isolation and community initiatives like Neighbourhood Watch programs. Despite the overall decline in burglaries, authorities emphasize the importance of prioritizing home security regardless of location.
