A devastating fire at a bar in Bangkok has resulted in 30 fatalities, with more than 70 individuals sustaining injuries during the incident at Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in the northern region of the Thai capital. Reports indicate that 24 of the injured remain in critical condition. This tragic event marks the deadliest fire in Bangkok over the past 17 years, with the bar supposedly accommodating up to 600 patrons, though the exact number present during the fire is unknown.
Authorities are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and the establishment’s adherence to safety regulations. Most of the victims were discovered trapped in windowless restrooms, potentially seeking refuge from the flames, as per the police. Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt has directed city officials to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of similar venues to assess safety risks and enhance the enforcement of safety protocols.
Outside the fire site, mourners have placed floral tributes with heartfelt messages in various languages, including Thai and Korean, to honor the victims. Amorn Pimanmas, the president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, highlighted potential fire hazards at the venue, citing factors such as enclosed spaces and low ceilings that could exacerbate risks. The utilization of foam for decoration without fire-retardant treatment, coupled with poor air circulation, may have contributed to the rapid spread of toxic smoke, leading to fatalities.
Furthermore, it was noted that the bar was licensed as a restaurant with live music rather than an entertainment venue due to zoning discrepancies, potentially exempting it from stricter fire safety regulations for entertainment establishments. Pimanmas emphasized the need for a reevaluation of fire safety procedures and stricter law enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future, urging the government to take necessary actions.
