A Caribbean band’s lead singer expressed deep shock and sorrow as five band members perished in an aviation tragedy in the Bahamas. Shaniese Miller of Da Pond Band shared her disbelief with the media following the devastating crash of a small Flamingo Air plane that claimed the lives of all 10 occupants. The band was en route to perform at an Independence Day event on Andros Island along with a DJ when the fatal incident occurred.
The aircraft departed from Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport for San Andros but tragically crashed in North Andros, according to the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority. Miller, in an interview with CBS, mourned the loss of her bandmates, emphasizing the profound impact they had on her life and music career.
Among the deceased band members were Giovanni McKenzie, Mateo Winder, Rashad Storr, Tonique Gilot, and Travis Johnson, along with DJ Fresh (Melvin Henfield). Shenia Roberts, another vocalist for the band, had arrived on the same ill-fated flight earlier that day.
The tragic loss deeply affected Miller, who described her bandmates as her closest companions and integral parts of her daily life. Prime Minister Philip Davis offered condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the pain and suffering they are enduring. The Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union also paid tribute to the departed artists, highlighting their significant contributions to the country’s cultural landscape.
While the identities of three non-performing passengers on the flight remain undisclosed, Bahamian authorities are actively investigating the crash. Following multiple aviation incidents, Flamingo Air has temporarily suspended all flights for safety reasons.
