“FIFA Considers Action Against Tuchel for Referee Criticism”

Date:

Thomas Tuchel may face consequences from FIFA after the 2026 World Cup for openly criticizing match officials. Several officials have been targeted by players and coaches during this summer’s tournament due to contentious decisions.

In an effort to uphold the integrity of the game, sources affiliated with World Football have suggested that measures might be taken following the conclusion of the current competition. A report from The Athletic indicates that any sanctions will be based on referee assessments and other relevant factors.

The incident arose when Tuchel voiced his discontent after England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the round of 16, marred by Jarell Quansah’s expulsion. Following the match, the Three Lions’ coach heavily criticized referee Alireza Faghani, expressing dissatisfaction with the officiating standards.

While the Premier League typically imposes touchline bans and fines on outspoken managers, FIFA is reportedly delaying any decisions until the end of the tournament.

Tuchel particularly felt aggrieved by Quansah’s red card as England has faced challenges in the right-back position throughout the World Cup. With players like Tino Livramento, Reece James, and Djed Spence dealing with injuries, adjustments had to be made swiftly.

Furthermore, the suspension of Folarin Balogun was postponed earlier in the tournament, contrasting with the immediate penalties faced by Quansah and others. Balogun, who received a red card in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, saw his one-game suspension deferred for a year by an independent disciplinary committee following intervention from the White House.

As a consequence, Balogun was able to participate in the round of 16 against Belgium, although his efforts were unsuccessful as the USA exited the tournament with a 4-1 defeat.
