“Thames Water CEO justifies £1M pay rise amid financial woes”

Date:

The CEO of Thames Water defended his nearly £1 million pay raise, stating it was justified despite the company’s financial struggles. Chris Weston’s annual salary increased from £869,000 to £995,000, amidst fines for missing pollution targets and a significant rise in customer complaints.

Weston justified his pay increase by emphasizing the need to attract top talent to manage the challenging circumstances the company faces. His total remuneration package for the year included significant perks such as pension contributions, a car allowance, and medical insurance.

Thames Water disclosed that its financial situation is precarious, with only enough funds to last until the end of the year. The company’s debt has escalated to nearly £20 billion, although it managed to turn a profit after suffering significant losses in the past.

Efforts are underway to negotiate a rescue deal with creditors, with calls for nationalization from key figures like Andy Burnham. Despite the uncertainties, Thames Water’s Chairman believes a market-led solution is the best approach to enhance customer service and environmental performance.

The company, which serves 16 million customers daily, faced a surge in complaints and pollution incidents in the past year. While Thames Water remains confident about its short-term survival, there are concerns about its long-term financial stability.

Critics, including Lib Dem’s Tim Farron, have criticized Thames Water’s financial management and environmental practices, calling for immediate action to transform the company into a customer-centric and environmentally responsible entity.
