Ukraine’s drone teams have launched attacks on 20 Russian ships overnight, marking a total of 136 assaults on Moscow’s fleet within just nine days. The Kremlin has expressed strong retaliation intentions in response to these Ukrainian actions, with Ukrainian cities preparing for potential missile and drone counterattacks.
The ongoing Ukrainian assaults have disrupted maritime traffic in the Kerch Strait, separating Crimea’s Kerch Peninsula from Russia’s Taman Peninsula. These attacks have significantly impeded Russian President Vladimir Putin’s naval aspirations, compelling Moscow to explore alternative trade routes. Notably, Ukraine targeted 17 oil tankers in the Black Sea, dealing a substantial blow to Putin’s financial resources derived from illegal energy trading that funds the conflict.
In addition to targeting oil refineries and gas depots in Russia over recent months, Ukraine is now aiming to undermine the Kremlin’s capability to procure weapons and support its frontline troops. Despite the Kremlin’s aggression towards Ukrainian civilians, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has labeled the Ukrainian offensives as “acts of terrorism.”
Responding to refinery strikes, Putin has warned of powerful retaliatory measures against Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. The threat to the Kerch Strait by Ukraine is forcing Russia to redirect defenses away from the frontlines, isolating the occupied Crimea peninsula further.
Reports suggest that Kyiv’s drone specialists have been instructed to inflict damage on vessels without completely destroying them, leading to costly repair efforts for the crews and escalating insurance costs for the ships. The strategic goal is to disrupt fuel supplies to Russian forces and occupied Crimea, as alternative land routes remain vulnerable to Ukrainian strikes.
Moreover, within Russia, long queues at petrol stations, along with rationing, have emerged, sparking unrest among frustrated drivers. These disruptive actions on oil and gas distribution networks, both on land and at sea, are significantly impacting Putin’s war efforts, reducing revenue, increasing costs and risks, and raising awareness among Russians about the toll of the conflict on civilians.
By isolating Crimea and obstructing supply routes into Ukraine, Kyiv is severely hindering Russian forces’ logistical capabilities and impacting the morale of troops. The effects of these actions are expected to have a profound impact on Putin’s war machinery and the overall conduct of the conflict.
Tragically, Russia’s recent aerial bombings in Ukraine’s Sumy region claimed three lives and left seven others injured. The situation remains tense, with both sides escalating their military actions in the region.
