A massive male great white shark, known as Contender, has reappeared in the Atlantic after vanishing for some time, sparking speculation that it might be heading towards popular coastal areas. Weighing an impressive 750kg and measuring 14ft in length, the shark was last detected off the Outer Banks of North Carolina in April but has now been tracked again.
Initially tagged by the OCEARCH research group near the Georgia and Florida coast in January 2025, Contender has covered over 7,000 miles along the eastern coast of North America. The latest signal was received on June 7, indicating the shark’s possible movement towards Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada, favored spots during its seasonal migration.
OCEARCH experts noted that the tracking tag on the shark’s fin only transmits a location when it momentarily breaks the water’s surface. They explained that the recent weak “Z-ping” signal received on July 7 did not provide an exact location, unlike previous data from April 23 when Contender was near North Carolina.
Having traveled extensively since tagging, the 1,700lb predator has journeyed from Florida waters to the Gulf of St Lawrence in Canada. OCEARCH emphasized that Contender’s movements offer valuable insights into the behavior and potential breeding patterns of male great white sharks in the Atlantic.
The research team suggested that the shark’s sudden shift to deeper waters could be related to foraging or potential reproductive activities, indicating the need for further observation. By monitoring Contender’s movements, researchers aim to enhance their understanding of great white shark migration and behavior, aiding conservation efforts for these ancient apex predators.
