A dentist in Texas was recently arrested and charged more than three months after a tragic incident involving the death of a 4-year-old patient during a dental procedure. The Fort Worth Police Department confirmed the arrest of Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill, 48, for causing serious bodily injury to a child, following the death of Aithana Rodríguez-Arriaga on April 1 at Cuddle Kids Dental Care.
The procedure, intended to address a tongue-tie issue, took a devastating turn when Aithana became unresponsive and later passed away at a local hospital despite efforts to save her. Investigations revealed that the child had toxic levels of meperidine (Demerol) in her system, a medication administered by Hemphill along with other sedatives before the procedure.
The medical examiner’s report highlighted that the dosage administered to Aithana was significantly higher than recommended levels for both adults and children, indicating potential negligence in the care provided. Hemphill, accused of failing to monitor the child’s condition and provide timely emergency assistance, faces severe legal consequences if convicted, including up to 20 years in prison and a substantial fine.
The tragic incident prompted an investigation by the Fort Worth Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit, leading to Hemphill’s arrest.
