Europe Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave

Date:

Britons planning trips to popular European vacation spots in the upcoming days may encounter an unprecedented heatwave across the continent. Temperatures have soared to the mid-40s in regions of Spain, France, and Italy. Even the UK is experiencing its third heatwave of the year.

According to the GFS weather model, Europe is set to experience temperatures significantly above the seasonal average next week. Predictions indicate potential highs of 44C in southern Spain, 42C in Catalonia, and 44C in Sicily on Thursday.

Friday is expected to be even hotter, with projections hinting at record-breaking temperatures reaching 48C in Andalusia, southern Spain. Seville, a favored destination for British tourists, could see temperatures hitting 46C or 47C as per the GFS model.

This extreme heat follows destructive wildfires that swept through southern Spain, causing the tragic loss of 13 lives, including seven British nationals. Weather alerts have been issued across Spain, with regions like Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, and Murcia facing warnings due to high temperatures.

Experts are cautioning that temperatures in Europe could soon reach as high as 50C. Professor Bill McGuire from UCL has warned about the possibility of surpassing the 50C mark, especially with the intensifying El Niño in the Pacific.
