“Man Sentenced to Prison for £177,000 Fake Relationship Scam”

Date:

A man has been sentenced to prison after deceiving another man into a fake relationship and swindling him out of £177,000. Joshua Teale, 30, manipulated his victim for over three years by fabricating stories about personal tragedies and financial needs, all while splurging the money on online gambling instead of the promised expenses.

The victim, speaking at Leeds Crown Court on July 17, expressed his devastation, stating that he sacrificed years of his life and financial stability to support Teale’s lies. Their acquaintance began at work in 2018, but the victim never suspected Teale’s intentions. After a chance encounter in 2020, Teale preyed on the man’s generosity by fabricating emergencies and emotional appeals for financial aid.

Despite the victim’s continuous financial support, Teale escalated his deceitful tactics by pretending to be hospitalized with Covid, requiring constant financial assistance for fictitious medical expenses. The victim’s bank intervened in May 2023 due to suspicious activities, leading to Teale’s arrest and confession of his gambling addiction-driven fraud scheme.

Teale, with a history of fraud-related convictions, eventually pleaded guilty to the charges but attributed his actions to a long-standing gambling problem. The court acknowledged the deliberate planning and emotional harm caused by Teale’s actions, sentencing him to five years and three months in prison for the sustained deception and financial ruin inflicted upon the victim.
