Trump Defends Netanyahu Against NYC Mayor’s Arrest Threat

Date:

Donald Trump has criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City for threatening to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he enters the city, asserting that the Israeli Prime Minister will not be detained under any circumstances.

Mamdani has indicated that discussions are ongoing within his administration regarding the possibility of arresting Netanyahu upon his arrival in New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. This decision comes after Netanyahu faced charges of war crimes in relation to the events in Gaza by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

During a press conference, Mamdani emphasized that Netanyahu is the subject of an ICC arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes, particularly for his involvement in the Gaza conflict. Mamdani highlighted that these facts are part of the public record and should be respected.

Following Mamdani’s statements, Donald Trump voiced his opposition on Truth Social, asserting that Netanyahu will not face arrest while in the United States. Trump also criticized those he believes should be held accountable for escalating conflicts with Iran.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Mamdani expressed his belief that Netanyahu should face trial at The Hague, branding him a war criminal based on ICC charges and public sentiment.

However, Mamdani acknowledged uncertainties about his authority to direct the New York Police Department to apprehend a foreign leader, stating that he would act within the confines of existing laws without creating new ones. Legal experts have deemed it unlikely for Mamdani to orchestrate Netanyahu’s arrest.

Netanyahu responded angrily to Mamdani’s remarks, dismissing the ICC’s jurisdiction over Americans and Israelis. He criticized the ICC’s arrest warrant as baseless and questioned Mamdani’s priorities, accusing him of diverting attention from local issues.
