Ukraine’s top military leader, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been dismissed following public outcry over the removal of the country’s popular defense minister. The Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, revealed his removal from office a week ago due to disagreements with Syrskyi, leading to widespread street protests that exposed divisions within the military regarding their approach to Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the protests the next day, expressing confidence in Fedorov’s continued role within his team. On July 21, Zelensky offered Fedorov a significant government position to oversee the technical aspects of the state and promote its progress, although it remains uncertain if Fedorov has accepted the offer.
Fedorov, aged 35, is recognized for his innovative technological strategies and recruitment methods. His removal as defense minister, coinciding with Ukraine’s military achievements, triggered a strong backlash from the public against Syrskyi.
In response to the public outcry, Zelensky convened with top generals and his chief of staff to acknowledge the sentiments of society. Syrskyi issued an apology to Fedorov in a local military publication on Monday, taking responsibility for establishing a drone unit and dispelling accusations of opposing drone technology.
Syrskyi will be succeeded by Mykhailo Drapatyi, the current commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, known for a viral video in 2014 driving an armored vehicle through a separatist barricade in Mariupol. Fedorov praised Drapatyi’s appointment as a symbol of new hope in the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice, while also expressing gratitude to Syrskyi for his dedication to defending Ukraine.
