“University student drowns in River Ouse tragedy”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded as a 19-year-old student, Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly, drowned in the River Ouse in York after entering the water following a night out with friends. Despite calling for help for 20 minutes, assistance did not arrive in time to save him. CCTV footage shown at the North Yorkshire Coroner’s Court captured Evan struggling in the freezing water while authorities attempted a rescue.

Evan, a business management student at the University of York, vanished beneath the surface before rescue teams could reach him. His mother, Lorraine d’Andilly, criticized the inadequacy of the available rescue equipment, stating that it hindered Evan’s chances of survival. Fire crews were notified shortly after Evan entered the water, but delays in the arrival of the rescue boat were cited during the inquest.

Witnesses described how Evan unexpectedly fell into the river, with no warning signs of his actions. Despite efforts from police and emergency services, Evan’s struggle to stay afloat ended tragically. Concerns were raised about the response time of the rescue operations and the suitability of the equipment used.

The inquest revealed that the closest rescue boat, the York Rescue Boat, was not immediately called upon for assistance. Questions were raised about the coordination between different rescue services and the time taken for the appropriate resources to reach the scene. Evan’s parents remembered him fondly, highlighting his kind and lively nature, and expressed their disbelief and sorrow over his untimely death.

Authorities expressed their condolences to Evan’s family and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing inquest. The investigation continues as questions arise about the safety protocols and response procedures in water-related emergencies. The tragic incident has sparked discussions about enhancing water safety measures and the need for swift action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
