Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently drew attention to the American casualties in the current conflict with Iran, comparing the death toll to previous wars in a boastful manner. Using the Truth Social platform, Trump listed the number of American soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam, Korean, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars. He highlighted the significant difference in casualties, stating, “Vietnam War: 58,220 DEAD over 19 years, Korean War: 36,574 DEAD over 3 years, Iraq War: 4,600 DEAD over 9 years, Afghanistan War: 2,000 DEAD over 20 years.”
Referring to the Iran conflict as the “Iran Military Conflict,” Trump then noted, “18 DEAD.” His post, which received criticism from various politicians, also mentioned a so-called “Venezuela War” that he claimed lasted only one day with “0 DEAD.”
This controversial statement from Trump came shortly after Iran’s attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan and Iraq, resulting in the deaths of four American service members. The Pentagon confirmed that aside from the 18 fatalities, around 500 individuals sustained injuries.
Since the conflict began on February 28 with a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Tehran, over 3,400 people have died in Iran, including 1,568 civilians and at least 236 children. These figures, reported by Reuters citing the U.S.-based human rights group HRANA, have not been independently verified.
Several politicians expressed strong reactions to Trump’s post, with some accusing him of callously downplaying the impact of the conflict. Former Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Trump for seemingly boasting about the deaths of 18 U.S. soldiers. California Governor Gavin Newsom labeled Trump as “disgusting” and urged respect for American troops.
Rep. Jason Crow, a Democrat from Colorado, voiced his disapproval of Trump’s post, emphasizing the significance of each fallen soldier to their families and loved ones. Trump announced plans to visit Dover Air Force Base for the dignified transfer of the four soldiers killed in the recent Iranian attacks, highlighting their sacrifice in preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The President asserted that the U.S. was retaliating against Iran in “honor” of the fallen troops.
