A police officer is set to appear in court following a fatal accident involving an e-bike that led to the death of a 16-year-old boy almost 10 months ago. The incident occurred on September 28, 2025, when off-duty officer Daniel Cartwright, 31, was involved in a collision with two cars and the e-bike on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire. Tragically, the young rider, Ryley Hutson, lost his life at the scene.
After months of investigation, Nottinghamshire Police has formally charged Mr. Cartwright, who serves with Bedfordshire Police, with causing death by dangerous driving. He resides in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and is scheduled to appear before Nottingham magistrates on August 6, 2026.
In the aftermath of the accident, a GoFundMe page was created by Ryley’s aunt to honor his memory as a vibrant and beloved individual. She described him as full of life, laughter, and love, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Initially, a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and subsequently released on police bail pending further investigation. Detective Inspector Jamie Moore from Nottinghamshire Police expressed the tragic impact the incident had on Ryley’s family and assured ongoing support for them.
A coroner’s inquest, overseen by Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner’s Court, was opened on December 2 to delve into the circumstances surrounding Ryley’s passing. The preliminary findings from a post-mortem examination indicated chest injuries as the likely cause of death.
