The British Foreign Office has recommended that UK citizens avoid non-essential travel to Bahrain and Kuwait due to the ongoing unpredictability in the region caused by tensions between the US and Iran.
In the latest travel advisory released today by the FCDO, British nationals in the Middle East are cautioned to expect potential flight cancellations, travel disturbances, and frequent airspace closures resulting from the escalating situation between Washington and Tehran.
According to the statement, although the US and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding on June 17 regarding the conflict in the Middle East, the overall situation in the region remains uncertain. Recent events include strikes and retaliatory actions by Iran in various locations, including Bahrain, targeting both US military and civilian infrastructure, with a possibility of further attacks and heightened tensions.
Additionally, on July 20, the US Embassy in Manama issued a warning that Iran might target unspecified locations in central Manama. Prior to the ceasefire, Iran had declared its intention to target sites associated with the US and Israel, such as organizations, businesses, and institutions.
Similar advice has been provided to British citizens in Kuwait, both countries having been inadvertently involved in the conflict between the US and Iran in recent months. Bahrain has been at risk of Iranian missile attacks due to US military presence, while Kuwait has faced drone threats to its airport since the conflict began.
