An Italian sports journalist, Luigi ‘Luca’ Esposito, is believed to have been burned alive as authorities delve into the details surrounding his tragic demise. Esposito, 53, went missing and was later found charred at a remote field in Salerno, Italy. His body was discovered after firefighters responded to a blaze in the area.
Esposito, who usually stayed in touch with coworkers, was uncharacteristically out of reach, with his last WhatsApp activity noted at 10:47 pm before his disappearance. His car keys were found near his body, but his mobile phone was missing.
Initially, it was thought that he had been shot before being set on fire. However, a recent autopsy did not conclusively determine if he was still alive when burned. Further tests are pending, which could take up to two months.
Authorities discovered that Esposito arrived at the location where his body was found in his car around 11 pm, according to nearby CCTV footage. He then left his vehicle on foot, presumably to meet someone. The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with physical assault, including head trauma and fractures.
Contrary to initial reports of gunshot wounds, no bullets were found in his body. The investigation is being treated as a murder case by prosecutors in Salerno, with anti-mafia chief Raffaele Cantone leading the inquiry.
Esposito, a dedicated fan of Serie B club Salernitana 1919, was actively involved in sports journalism and appeared on television as a pundit. Despite claims of holding a position at a regional agency, ARPAC denied any employment relationship with him.
The Order of Biologists of Campania and Molise also refuted Esposito’s membership claims. Police have not made any arrests yet, and the investigation into Esposito’s death is ongoing.
