More than 100 wealthy individuals residing in the UK, including former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, have signed a letter urging incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement a tax on their riches. The letter, organized by Patriotic Millionaires UK, advocates for higher taxes on the wealthiest individuals in the country rather than on ordinary workers.
Andy Burnham has previously expressed support for a wealth tax and hinted at the possibility of requiring more contributions from the wealthiest individuals. Patriotic Millionaires and Tax Justice UK are proposing an annual 2% tax on wealth exceeding £10 million, which they estimate would impact approximately 20,000 individuals in the UK, constituting less than 0.04% of the population.
Gary Lineker, one of the signatories to the letter along with 120 other millionaires, emphasized the importance of unity for the nation, stating, “Our country deserves our collective support. I am honored to stand alongside individuals in the UK who aspire to a more equitable society.” Lineker stressed the significance of paying a fair share, highlighting the willingness of most affluent individuals to contribute more for a better and fairer Britain.
Upon assuming office, Andy Burnham did not dismiss the possibility of a wealth tax during an interview with the former footballer. The Labour leader emphasized the need for fairness and ensuring that decisions are made equitably while avoiding creating division among the populace.
Wes Streeting, recently appointed as Defence Secretary, has also endorsed the implementation of a viable wealth tax, referring to it as an effective measure.
