A concerning report reveals the areas in the UK with the highest rates of sexual crimes, showing significant disparities across different regions. Recent statistics indicate a surge in sexual assaults, with 217,567 offenses documented in England and Wales between March 2025 and March 2026, marking a four percent increase compared to the previous year.
Data from 2025 indicates that over 7.7 million individuals aged 16 and above, representing more than 15% of the population, have encountered sexual assault. Additionally, close to four percent, approximately 1.9 million people, have been victims of rape or attempted rape. The latest government data shows that there are currently 73,047 registered sex offenders under police supervision in the UK, a stark 85% rise over the past 15 years since initial figures were published in 2010/11, which reported 36,921 offenders.
Notably, Cleveland Police, covering areas like Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees, has the highest rate of sexual offenses, recording 5.0 sex crimes per 1,000 people, surpassing the national average of 3.5. In comparison, West Yorkshire follows as the second-highest area with a rate of 4.4 offenses per 1,000 individuals. Meanwhile, Surrey Police reported the lowest rate at 2.3 sexual offenses, with London slightly below the national average at 3.1 per 1,000 people.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to combat violence against women and girls, acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge presented by the latest statistics. Notably, the Crown Prosecution Service has seen a rise in charging ‘rape-flagged suspects,’ achieving the highest rate of charged cases referred by police in two decades. Siobhan Blake, National CPS lead for Rape and Serious Sexual Offences, emphasized the commitment to providing justice for victims of these heinous crimes, encouraging survivors to seek justice and support.
