“Manchester’s New No10: Andy Burnham’s Office Transformation”

Date:

For generations, there has been only one No10 known worldwide for its historical significance as the residence of British Prime Ministers since 1735. However, a new contender has emerged in Manchester – a black door in an office building.

Andy Burnham, aiming to tackle regional inequalities in Britain, intends to transform Heron House, the GCHQ’s north-west base, into a pivotal hub for the nation. In a bold move, he showcased the office to cameras, offering a rare glimpse of the inner workings where the country’s affairs will be managed, at least one day per week.

The entrance features a replica No10 door, adorned with images of the Manchester worker bee, a symbol Mr. Burnham holds dear, even tattooed on his arm. Within the office, portraits by Stanley Chow adorn the walls, depicting notable Mancunians like Marcus Rashford, Alan Turing, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Lemn Sissay, adding a touch of local pride.

Having served as Mayor of Greater Manchester for nearly ten years, Mr. Burnham is intimately familiar with the building. Describing the space with a mix of grey, brown, and cream décor and expansive windows overlooking Albert Square, he expressed a sense of closure and significance in the transformation.

This modern office setting stands in stark contrast to the traditional and somewhat challenging environment of 10 Downing Street. Occupants of the historic residence have long grumbled about the cramped and maze-like layout, with staff scattered across different areas, while grand rooms remain underutilized.

Despite the charming presence of Larry, the No10 cat, reports of mice scurrying amid desks and inconsistent air conditioning and heating persist. Cold taps often run lukewarm, and meals must be brought from the nearby Cabinet Office canteen, highlighting the building’s outdated facilities.

One No10 insider remarked, “It’s a mishmash building that does not meet modern workplace standards.”
