Yellow heat health alerts have been issued for regions including the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West, and West Midlands from Friday morning until Sunday morning.
Temperatures in these regions are projected to reach the mid to high 20s, with a peak of 30 degrees Celsius likely as the country continues to endure a prolonged period of warm and dry weather. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a heat health warning following the declaration of drought in North Wales and the Upper Severn due to unprecedented dry conditions, heatwaves, wildfires, and diminishing water levels.
The current dry spell follows a similar drought summer last year, underscoring the escalating impact of human-induced climate change, primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels. The Met Office has forecasted temperatures hitting 30 degrees Celsius in parts of South East England on Friday, with Scotland and Northern Ireland experiencing intermittent cloud cover.
Craig Snell, a forecaster, mentioned that rain showers are anticipated to progress southwards on Saturday, extending from Scotland and Northern Ireland to northern England and parts of Wales. By Sunday, a cooling trend is expected across the UK, with the possibility of rain in areas that have experienced minimal rainfall in recent weeks. The heat alerts have been issued as millions of motorists are anticipated to embark on summer road trips.
The AA disclosed that approximately 6.3 million drivers are planning road journeys exceeding 100 miles between Friday and Thursday. The Port of Dover is gearing up for a busy weekend and has taken measures to streamline any delays arising from new EU border checks.
