Local residents residing near a beach where a mother and her daughter tragically drowned during a fateful day trip have expressed concerns that the incident was inevitable. Samiha Rahman, 15, and her mother Shally Rahman, 41, hailing from Ilford, London, lost their lives after encountering difficulties at West Mersea Beach on Mersea Island, Essex, on a Wednesday evening.
According to a family friend, the pair, described as inexperienced swimmers, were at the beach for a leisurely outing. Essex Police received a distress call from the ambulance service at 5:35 pm on the same day, alerting them to multiple individuals struggling in the water.
Confirming the tragic event, authorities disclosed that the mother and daughter, in an attempt to assist a seven-year-old family member now in critical condition at a hospital, found themselves in peril. Emergency services managed to rescue two other individuals at the scene.
This incident comes after a previous drowning in 2023 and years of local apprehension regarding the adequacy of safety precautions and warnings along the beach. Witnesses observed the group stranded on a sandbank as the tide rapidly encroached, submerging several individuals.
Shally Rahman’s brother-in-law, Matiur Rahman, recounted that approximately ten family members were enjoying beach activities when a sudden wave struck, leaving them in shock and disbelief. The East of England Ambulance Service initially airlifted one individual and transported three others by road to seek medical attention after the water incident near Sea View Holiday Park.
Community members promptly responded to the distress calls, with reports of a man rescuing multiple individuals from the water, along with a group of teenage waitresses who were among the first to offer aid. Praising the bravery of Leonie Powling, Keira French, and their peers, who assisted in the rescue operation, Seaview Beach Diner owner Melanie Shuker commended their swift action during the crisis.
Melissa French, another café worker, lamented the tragic event, labeling it a foreseeable disaster due to the lack of adequate signage and safety equipment along West Mersea Beach. She emphasized the urgent need for warning signs and improved safety measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
Colchester Council defended its safety measures, stating that decisions are based on professional risk assessments and expert advice. Despite calls for enhanced precautions, the council referenced an independent beach risk assessment that did not recommend public rescue equipment installation in the area due to operational challenges during emergencies.
Advocates are rallying for ‘Sam’s Law’ and mandatory water safety education in light of the tragic incident, aligning with the Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign launched to prevent further water-related fatalities. World Drowning Prevention Day is approaching, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to safeguard lives near water bodies.
