A man shared his harrowing experience of being forcefully pushed against his door when a massive explosion ripped through the countryside in Essex. The incident led to a major emergency declaration by the police, prompting the evacuation of residents from their homes following a detonation of a large fertiliser container during firefighting efforts in the vicinity of East Hanningfield and Rettendon.
The fire, which engulfed industrial buildings and a field, generated a colossal fireball and a shockwave that was perceptible up to 15 miles away. Firefighters continued their presence at the site the next morning after extinguishing the flames overnight.
Scott Johnson, a 46-year-old wedding photographer from Chelmsford, Galleywood, witnessed the explosion and recounted how its intensity propelled him into his studio door. Reflecting on the moment, Scott expressed astonishment, stating, “I’ve never experienced anything like it before in my life. The force was so strong that it pushed me against the studio door just as I was closing it. Had the door been open, I would have been thrust inside.”
He further detailed the aftermath of the explosion, mentioning, “I glanced up and saw debris falling on me, ablaze with fire. There were metal fragments, wood pieces, and various materials raining down. Thankfully, I escaped unharmed except for a ringing in my ear.”
Despite the damage, Scott indicated optimism about the condition of his studio, mentioning the roof had sustained damage but appeared to be intact based on aerial footage. He managed to salvage most of his valuable equipment from the industrial estate where his studio is located.
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service dispatched 100 firefighters to the scene during the peak of the emergency response, with evacuations conducted in the immediate vicinity of the explosion. Residents were advised to keep their doors and windows shut as a precaution due to the significant smoke plumes.
Approximately 50 firefighters remained on-site the following morning to extinguish the remaining flames. Group Manager Dave Walpole emphasized the ongoing presence at the scene, cautioning residents to keep their residences sealed due to the persistent smoke.
Area Manager Dave Bond confirmed the controlled status of the fire, reassuring the public of no broader risk. He elaborated on the incident, mentioning several industrial units and a field had caught fire, necessitating efforts to prevent the spread to nearby houses.
Bond clarified that a fertilizer explosion within one of the units triggered the emergency, causing audible shockwaves across the county. He affirmed the safety of all individuals at the scene and the evacuation of nearby residents as a precautionary measure.
The firefighting operations were expected to continue throughout the night, with road closures in effect. Residents in the vicinity were advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke emissions, while urging others to avoid the area for safety reasons.
