A tragic incident unfolded at a daycare center in São Paulo, Brazil, resulting in the death of a one-year-old boy named Abdoulaye Dieng. The child was asphyxiated after his head became stuck between a mirror and an iron bar while he was in the playroom at the Luz do Bras daycare.
It is reported that Abdoulaye struggled for approximately six minutes before nursery staff returned and discovered the situation. They promptly freed him and sought assistance from the military police. Despite their efforts, Abdoulaye was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Mooca Emergency Care Unit.
The boy’s father, Ibrahima Dieng, had dropped him off just two hours before the incident occurred. Initially, daycare staff informed the family that Abdoulaye had fallen ill and was being taken to the hospital. However, it was later revealed that the child had tragically passed away.
Allegations arose that children were left unsupervised at the daycare while staff attended a birthday celebration for the director. This prompted an investigation into the matter, with potential manslaughter charges being considered.
Five employees, including the director, a coordinator, a teacher, a pedagogue, and another staff member, were questioned by Civil Police officers regarding the incident. The Municipal Department of Education stated that appropriate actions would be taken if irregularities were confirmed, potentially leading to the disqualification of the organization responsible for the daycare.
Abdoulaye’s funeral took place on July 24, leaving his family devastated. Ibrahima, a Senegalese national who has been living in Brazil for eight years, expressed profound sadness over the loss of his son, emphasizing the difficulty his wife will face in coping with the tragedy.
