Former Treasury head, John Healey, resigned from the government, criticizing the insufficient allocation of funds for national defense by Keir Starmer and previous Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
The government faces mounting pressure to increase defense spending to 3% of national income, but a clear timeline for achieving this target is yet to be outlined. Healey emphasized that prioritizing defense spending is crucial to ensuring the safety and protection of citizens.
While the current defense budget is projected to reach 2.7% of GDP by 2029, Healey’s resignation underscored the absence of a set timeline to achieve the 3% target. The succeeding Defense Secretary has not disclosed detailed defense spending plans yet but affirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling defense obligations to international partners.
In his upcoming Budget, Mr. Healey will need to secure an additional £4.7 billion to fund the government’s Defense Investment Plan (DIP), published on June 30. This funding requirement will need to be addressed in the Budget, necessitating the Chancellor to explore cost-saving measures or potential tax increases during the summer.
