An Asda store in Hayle had to close temporarily due to a wall collapse in its car park. A significant portion of the exterior wall crumbled, leaving a large hole and debris scattered on the ground. Asda attributed the closure to adverse weather conditions.
According to a spokesperson, the Hayle Harbour store closure was necessary for safety reasons, with a cordoned-off area outside. Customers were reassured that the Penzance Express and Falmouth stores were operating normally.
Meanwhile, Asda announced plans to outsource delivery for its George clothing brand’s online orders, affecting approximately 1,200 employees. The company intends to shift distribution to DHL by January 2027, transferring all online clothing operations to DHL’s Derby location.
Employees impacted by the changes will have the option to transfer to DHL while the distribution sites for in-store George purchases will remain open. As George.com expands, with projections to double in size by 2032, the move aims to support the growth of the online business.
David Lepley, Asda’s chief supply chain officer, emphasized the proposal’s role in advancing George.com’s growth. The transition is expected to begin in early 2027, ensuring employee benefits under TUPE regulations.
Despite concerns raised by the GMB trade union about job cuts and company ownership by private equity firm TDR Capital, Asda’s executive chairman, Allan Leighton, refuted the claims. The ongoing changes are part of Asda’s strategic response to the evolving retail landscape.
