A group of British public figures, including Gary Lineker and Brian Cox, have put up their personal belongings for auction to raise funds for Palestinian students seeking education opportunities in the UK.
Over 20 celebrities, such as Derry Girls’ Nicola Coughlan and Bridgerton’s stars, Paloma Faith, and Charlotte Church, contributed various items to the Scholarships for Gaza auction organized by the Phoenix Space charity. The online auction, running for ten days from July 27, aims to support students from Gaza who lack financial means to pursue studies in the UK.
The UK government recently announced its commitment to assisting Palestinian students in leaving Gaza for top UK universities if they secure full scholarships or self-fund their tuition. Last academic year, more than 100 students were evacuated from Gaza to pursue education in the UK.
In an effort to provide opportunities for talented individuals in Gaza, 23 celebrities from different fields, including sports, music, and film, united to participate in the online auction for Scholarships for Gaza. One such individual hoping to study in the UK is Mohammed Hasanain, who received an offer to pursue a Master’s in business and management at the University of Glasgow but requires financial support.
Gary Lineker, known for hosting “The Rest is Football,” contributed a signed Nagoya Grampus Eight football shirt, while Brian Cox offered a collection of memorabilia, including signed items and original flyers from his stage productions. Additionally, Charlotte Church donated a one-night stay at her wellness retreat, The Dreaming.
Furthermore, actress Siobhan McSweeney and Nicola Coughlan from Derry Girls donated a signed photo from their time on set. McSweeney emphasized the importance of schools and educational institutions in fostering community, friendships, and problem-solving skills, highlighting the essence of school life.
Singer Paloma Faith also participated by auctioning a signed copy of her book, expressing solidarity with mothers in Gaza who strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children.
Gaza has suffered extensive damage to its infrastructure, including higher education facilities, due to prolonged conflicts. UNESCO reported that the majority of higher education campuses in Gaza were either destroyed or severely damaged. The restoration of these educational institutions is crucial not only for rebuilding infrastructure but also for offering hope and prosperity to the younger generation.
The Scholarships for Gaza auction provides an opportunity for individuals to support Palestinian students in their pursuit of education.
