More than 360,000 individuals have been relocated from southern Europe, with millions advised to steer clear of the most severely affected regions due to wildfires that have obliterated an area equivalent to the size of Cornwall.
In France, over 250,000 people evacuated their residences while another 116,000 were compelled to flee the vicinity around Madrid in Spain. The fires encroached within seven miles of Bordeaux, a hub for wine production and tourism, prompting a significant number of British citizens to alter their summer vacation plans.
Helicopters doused vast stretches of forest with water as over 42,000 hectares of land were scorched in southern France due to the intense heat. The year 2026 has witnessed a surge in wildfires and extensive damage across EU nations, surpassing the average with 1,325 fires and 378,000 hectares of land burned by July 22, an area surpassing that of Cornwall.
The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) data displayed the wildfires spreading across southern Europe, with another heatwave forecasted for the week, anticipating temperatures to soar to 40C (104F).
Experts suggest that global warming is intensifying the unprecedented destruction in Europe, making fires harder to manage than ever before. The severity of fires in Europe in 2026 has reached record levels, with fire control becoming increasingly challenging compared to previous years.
The week of July 15-22 marked the most devastating July week in history across Europe, witnessing more than 180,000 hectares of land ravaged in EU countries. Nearly half of this year’s land destruction occurred during that particular week alone.
A family narrowly escaped a wildfire near Cotignac in southern France as flames approached their property, recounting a harrowing experience of witnessing the fire’s advance. Despite the surrounding area being charred, their house remained intact.
While the UK government has not issued specific warnings against travel to France or Spain, caution is advised. Travel insurance policies with trip disruption cover may help cover some costs resulting from wildfire disruptions. Refunds from airlines, tour operators, or accommodation providers could also be sought.
According to marketing experts Defaqto, only half of travel insurance policies offer “catastrophe” cover. The Spanish Prime Minister highlighted a sixfold increase in the land area scorched by wildfires in Spain compared to the previous year. France’s Interior Minister described the firefighting scenario in Gironde as “unprecedented,” emphasizing the challenges posed by erratic fire behavior.
Gironde, situated on France’s west coast, has witnessed a significant blaze that has devoured 40,000 hectares of land – nearly double the area burned by wildfires in 2022.
