Hundreds of individuals are visiting hospital emergency departments for eye issues that could be addressed at local free clinics. Recent data reveals that around 400,000 people sought hospital care for common eye problems like conjunctivitis and dry eye, which could have been managed by community opticians.
The Association of Optometrists (AOP) estimates that a significant portion, ranging from 62% to 78%, of the 780,000 eye-related A&E visits in England could be appropriately handled by opticians in the community. This could potentially save up to 400,000 visits to overwhelmed A&E departments by utilizing high street services more effectively.
AOP is advocating for increased funding for urgent and minor eye care services in optometry practices to enable them to provide NHS clinics as an alternative to A&E visits. AOP’s CEO, Adam Sampson, emphasized the importance of not defaulting to emergency departments for eye issues, highlighting the capacity of community-based optometrists to treat these patients effectively.
While A&E wait times have remained high in recent years, there has been a call for improved access to minor and urgent eye care services at optometrists. These services cater to conditions such as red eyes, infections, and sudden vision changes, offering free assessments and treatments. However, not all opticians have NHS funding for these clinics, leading to disparities in access across different areas.
Adam Sampson stressed the need for consistent eye care services nationwide, emphasizing that every individual should have access to high street eye care services, similar to the accessibility of community pharmacies. Addressing these issues could alleviate pressure on A&E departments and improve overall patient care.
