Man Dies in Montana Park Grizzly Attack

Date:

A tragic incident in Montana’s Glacier National Park has resulted in the death of a man who fell 100 feet after being attacked by a surprised grizzly bear, according to a recent investigation. This marks the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1998. Despite this, authorities have decided against euthanizing or hunting down the bear responsible, as it was not actively hunting the man at the time of the incident.

The victim, 33-year-old Anthony Pollio from Fort Lauderdale, was hiking alone on the Mount Brown Lookout trail when the attack occurred. The trail, known for its steep terrain, was obstructed by fallen trees, hindering visibility for both the bear and Pollio. The attack took place around 9:30 pm when they were in close proximity due to limited visibility.

During the altercation, Pollio managed to deploy bear spray but tragically fell down a hillside, with the bear continuing its assault. Despite falling nearly 100 feet and briefly escaping the bear, Pollio was attacked again as he tried to climb back up the slope. The final blow to his head proved fatal, and the bear left the area after the attack.

Investigators determined that the bear’s actions were defensive, as Pollio seemingly surprised the bear unknowingly. DNA evidence from hair found at the scene suggested the bear was around 15 years old and likely a resident of Glacier Park. Due to the unexpected nature of the attack, the bear was not deemed a threat that needed to be put down.

Bear attacks in the park are rare, with only 10 incidents recorded since 1967. The report concluded with safety recommendations for hikers, emphasizing the importance of staying alert, making noise, carrying bear spray, and avoiding hiking alone or at night to prevent similar encounters in the future.
