Despite government assurances, eligible individuals in danger still lack a viable path to safety.
The Defence Committee condemned the secrecy surrounding the inadvertent release of over 18,000 names in 2022, exposing them to Taliban threats. While a new resettlement route was quietly established, significant deficiencies were uncovered in its implementation.
The committee emphasized that the breach was not an isolated incident but a foreseeable systemic failure. Urgent measures were urged to aid those stranded due to delays, lack of transparency, and flawed decision-making processes. The committee underscored the need for safeguarding eligible Afghans who cannot access UK entry-clearance checks via a third country.
Concerns were raised about the exclusion of individuals deserving relocation to the UK years ago due to current policies. The Defence Committee scrutinized the mishandling of Afghan relocation applications, including the sharing of personal data on social media and the treatment of Afghan collaborators known as Triples.
A new policy implemented since April requires eligible Afghans to finance their travel to a third country for security screenings. The government was widely criticized for its response following the fall of Kabul in 2021, leaving many stranded under Taliban rule.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, an MoD spokesperson expressed regret over the incident’s impact and affirmed the commitment to conclude the Afghan resettlement program by the end of the current Parliament. Efforts to enhance data protection, streamline case-working procedures, and reinforce program oversight have been initiated to prevent future incidents.
The MoD welcomed scrutiny from the public and parliament to facilitate learning and accountability. Collaboration with the committee to address the issue was assured as part of ongoing efforts to rectify the situation.
