Andy Burnham has confirmed that the UK has secured the future of its nuclear deterrent with an £8.4 billion investment. The Prime Minister announced the significant funding for the country’s nuclear-armed submarines, specifically the new HMS Dreadnought, which is expected to be operational by the 2030s.
These new nuclear-armed submarines will replace the existing Vanguard Class fleet and will have the capability to launch Trident 2 D5 ballistic missiles. Burnham emphasized the importance of this investment during his visit to Barrow in Cumbria, stating that it ensures the town’s future for many decades.
The government anticipates that this investment will support the creation of 18,000 additional jobs in nuclear defense by 2030 and provide opportunities for 22,000 more apprentices by 2035. Burnham stressed the significance of this investment in bolstering national security and supporting the local economy.
Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting declined to guarantee that the UK will allocate 3% of its GDP to defense spending by 2030. Streeting reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to meeting overall defense goals and spending pledges to Nato but did not commit to specific future spending levels.
Both Burnham and Streeting have refrained from committing to the 3% defense spending target by 2030, despite previous debates on the issue. Streeting highlighted the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline and clarity in funding commitments to avoid economic uncertainty and higher borrowing costs.
