A boat pilot who recorded himself navigating a dangerously overcrowded vessel has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison. Rekar Nabaz, a 28-year-old Iraqi national, was convicted for risking lives and entering the UK without proper clearance. When the Border Security Command tried to intercept the boat on June 20, Nabaz maneuvered it erratically from side to side.
The vessel carried 52 individuals, many without life jackets or any safety gear despite poor visibility that day. The video of the incident came to light a day after four people lost their lives while attempting to travel from France to the UK. Nabaz is the eighth individual to be found guilty of endangerment in less than two months, with 25 similar cases still in progress. This offense was established under the Border Security, Immigration, and Asylum Act, enacted last year.
Immigration Minister Anna Turley stated, “Eight small boat pilots have now been imprisoned under the endangerment charge. We are sending a strong message to those involved in bringing migrants to British shores: we will utilize all legal means to ensure you face consequences.”
Last month, Algerian national Azzeddine Ain-Bouzid, aged 29, was sentenced to two years in prison after drone footage captured him steering a boat carrying 67 passengers, exceeding its intended capacity of 20.
The government has committed to addressing small boat crossings, having recently struck a significant agreement with France to enhance law enforcement actions on beaches. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced various measures to dissuade individuals from attempting to enter the UK, including a contentious proposal to reassess refugee status every two-and-a-half weeks.
While there has been a notable decrease in crossings, Home Office data reveals a 42% reduction in small boat arrivals compared to the previous year. However, at least 13 fatalities have been reported this year, with four deaths occurring within 24 hours. Tragic incidents included a boat capsizing off France’s northern coast, resulting in one fatality and injuries to a one-year-old child. Additionally, three individuals were discovered deceased on a boat departing from Dunkirk.
Despite the government’s claims of progress in curbing crossings, there are acknowledged challenges ahead. Safe Passage International, a charity, condemned the deaths as “devastating and preventable,” urging the government to take responsibility for the lack of safe pathways for refugees.
